Updated 2026. The classic trap is to impose tiring daily trips between the city center and the park. We recommend a 'split' stay: start by immersing yourself 100% at the Disney resort for 2 days with an overnight stay, then move to a hotel in Kowloon to explore the city.
Split your stay: start with 2 days at the resort with 1 Disney night, then go for 3 days to Kowloon.
Perfect itinerary in 5 days: D1 Arrival & Disney hotel installation → D2 Hong Kong Disneyland & Momentous → D3 Lantau (Big Buddha) then transfer to Kowloon → D4 Victoria Peak & Hong Kong Island → D5 Kowloon & Departure.
1. Detailed program: The perfect City & Parks combination
Day 1: Immersion at the resort and relaxing evening. Arrive at the Hong Kong airport and go directly to your Disney hotel (the Explorers Lodge is our favorite) in 15 minutes by taxi. Relaxing afternoon by the tropical swimming pool, buffet dinner at the Characters Chef Mickey restaurant and stroll along the Penny's Bay seafront promenade.
Day 2: A magical day at Hong Kong Disneyland. Use Early Park Entry to enter 1 hour before the official opening. Enjoy World of Frozen and Mystic Manor in the morning. Follow the daytime shows and attend the grandiose final nighttime show Momentous projected on the castle.
Day 3: The Lantau Big Buddha & installation in Kowloon. Leave the Disney hotel and take the subway or a taxi (15 min) to Tung Chung. Leave your luggage at the station's luggage storage, then board the Ngong Ping 360 cable car to visit the majestic Tian Tan Big Buddha. Collect your luggage in the late afternoon and take the MTR direct to Kowloon to check into your new hotel.
Baggage handling
Disney hotels will hold your luggage free of charge after you check out. Additionally, Tung Chung MTR Station and Ngong Ping Cable Car offer convenient secure luggage storage.
2. Transportation: MTR Metro and Disneyland Resort Line
Hong Kong has one of the most efficient, clean and economical public transport networks on the planet. Traveling between the city and the park is a breeze.
The Disneyland Resort Line: This short rail branch of the MTR connects the Sunny Bay interchange station to the Disneyland Resort station. Trains run every 3 to 5 minutes. The subway trains are true collector's items: windows in the shape of Mickey's head, Mickey grab handles and bronze statues of characters on board. It's the ideal start to the adventure.
From Sunny Bay (The hub station): Sunny Bay is located on the Tung Chung Line (the orange line). It allows you to reach Central (Hong Kong Station) in just 30 minutes, or the town of Tung Chung in 10 minutes. This is the major logistical axis of your combined stay.
The taxi trap
In Hong Kong, taxis are divided by color according to their operational area. You must take a **red taxi** (Urban Taxi) to go into town. Green (New Territories) and blue (Lantau) taxis cannot enter most areas of Kowloon or Hong Kong Island.
3. The Octopus Card: Your key to unlocking the city
The Octopus Card is the real financial and logistical heart of Hong Kong. Originally created for public transport, it is now accepted everywhere.
Where to use it? On the subway (MTR), buses, the famous double-decker trams (Ding Ding), Star Ferry, convenience stores (7-Eleven, Circle K), supermarkets, vending machines and even most shops and restaurants in Hong Kong Disneyland.
Physical version vs Mobile (Apple/Google Wallet): The modern and most comfortable solution is to add a virtual Octopus card directly to the Apple Wallet application on your iPhone or Google Wallet. You can instantly load it in seconds with your international bank card without having to queue at the counters.
Charging advice
If you use the Apple Wallet app, make sure to top up your Octopus with a bank card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees (like Revolut or Wise) to avoid accumulating bank fees.
4. Lantau Island: Extend the magic beyond the parks
Hong Kong Disneyland is built on Lantau Island, the largest island in the territory. Lantau is full of cultural and natural treasures that fully justify spending an extra day there.
The Big Buddha of Tian Tan: Located at the top of Ngong Ping Hill, this giant seated bronze Buddha, 34 meters high, faces the Po Lin Monastery. It is one of the most sacred spiritual sites in Hong Kong.
The Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car: This is the spectacular access route from Tung Chung metro station. The 25-minute ride offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the South China Sea, airport runways and the island's lush green mountains. For a memorable experience, book a **Crystal Cabin** with a transparent floor.
Buy in advance
The queue for the Ngong Ping 360 cable car at Tung Chung station can easily exceed 1.5 hours on weekends. It is essential to purchase your skip-the-line ticket in advance on Klook to go through the fast priority line.
