Since the opening of Universal Epic Universe on May 22, 2025, Orlando has become the only destination in the world where you can visit 4 Disney parks + 4 Universal parks in a single stay. This ultimate combo requires a minimum of 14 nights to do without running — this guide gives you the optimal itinerary, budget calculations, transportation strategies between the two resorts and tips to avoid collector park fatigue.

Updated May 2026. This guide is aimed at visitors who want to visit both resorts on the same trip. The key question is no longer 'WDW or Universal' but 'how to combine them without wasting a day on transport'. The answer: plan your Universal days at the end of your stay so as not to change hotels along the way.
Do WDW first (7 days), then Uber to Universal and finish at Epic Universe — your most recent memories will be the most memorable.
In terms of logistics, staying at WDW for the first 7 days then moving to a Universal Premier hotel for the last 3 (including 1-2 Epic Universe days) is the most efficient strategy. You avoid changing hotels en route and benefit from Express Unlimited included with your Universal hotel.
1. How many days to properly do both resorts?
Trick question number 1: underestimate the size of each resort. Walt Disney World alone deserves 7 to 10 days to do without running through all 4 parks. Universal Orlando (Epic Universe included) requires 3 to 4 days minimum for all 4 parks.
The absolute minimum (10 nights): WDW 3 parks over 5 days + Universal 2 parks over 3 days + Epic Universe 1 day. Doable but exhausting — you'll be in 'to-do list' mode rather than 'enjoy' mode.
The ideal (14 nights): WDW 4 parks in 7–8 days (with 1 rest/swimming day) + Universal 4 parks in 4 days (with 2 days on Epic Universe). This schedule provides a buffer day for unforeseen events (weather, long lines, closed attractions).
The trap of park hopping between resorts
Never try to do WDW in the morning and Epic Universe in the afternoon in the same day — or vice versa. The Uber ride (25–40 minutes) + parking time + acclimating to a new resort easily adds up to 2 wasted hours. Each resort deserves a minimum dedicated day.
2. Travel between WDW and Universal Epic Universe
There is no direct transportation between Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort. The two resorts are separated by approximately 8 to 10 miles by car, via I-4 or Route 192 (Sand Lake Road).
Our recommendation: Uber or Lyft for occasional trips between the two resorts (approximately 1 to 2 times over a 14-day stay). For families who want to maintain their flexibility, an economical rental car ($20–30/d) amortized over 4 days from Universal is often more profitable than repeated VTCs.
Intelligent travel timing
Plan your WDW → Universal trip on the morning of your first Universal day (early check-in possible), and your Universal → WDW return on the evening of your last Universal day. This way you avoid unnecessary back and forths.
| Mode of transportation | Estimated duration | Estimated cost | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uber/Lyft | 25–40 min depending on traffic | $25–$45 (x2 return) | ⭐ Recommended option |
| Rental car | 25–40 mins | $30 UOR parking/day | Ideal if you move often |
| Mears Taxi (no app) | 25–40 mins | $45–$60 | Without a smartphone |
| Lynx Bus 311 | ~2h with connection | $2 one way | Extreme budget only |
3. Comparative budget: WDW vs Epic Universe
The two resorts have very different cost structures. Here is an indicative budget for a family of 4 people (2 adults + 2 children aged 8 and 11) in moderate high season (March).
Express Universal budget tip: When staying at a Premier Universal hotel (Portofino Bay, Hard Rock, Royal Pacific, Helios Grand, Stella Nova or Terra Luna), Express Unlimited is included for the entire stay. For 3 nights, this can be a savings of $600-$1,000 over the cost of Express Passes purchased separately.
Reservation and anticipation
Premier Universal hotels with Express Unlimited included book 4 to 6 months in advance for the best availability and rates. At WDW, Advanced Dining Reservations (ADR) for popular restaurants open 60 days prior to arrival — book as soon as this window opens.
| Expenditure item | Walt Disney World (7 days) | Universal + Epic (4d) |
|---|---|---|
| Entrance tickets (4 people) | ~$1,400 (Park Hopper 7d) | ~$800 (4 multi-day parks) |
| Lightning Lane / Express Pass | ~$400 (LL Multi 5d) | ~$600 (Express Unlimited Epic x4) |
| Hotel on site | $1,400–2,800 (Moderate 7n) | $700–$2,100 (Standard/First 3n) |
| Catering (estimated) | ~$1,200 ($70/pers/d) | ~$600 ($50/pers/day) |
| Estimated total | $4,400–5,800 | $2,700–4,100 |
4. Optimal itinerary 14 days
Here is the recommended breakdown for a 14-night stay in Orlando with both resorts.
Placement logic
By placing Epic Universe at the end of your stay, you keep the most recent and innovative experiences as the last memory of your trip. It also avoids the psychological frustration of starting with the 'new' and ending with the 'known'.
Days 1–2: Installation and Magic Kingdom
Day 1: Arrival at MCO, installation in your WDW hotel, discovery of Disney Springs in the evening. Day 2: Magic Kingdom — Rope Drop on TRON Lightcycle Run (LL Premier highly recommended), Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Space Mountain. Evening parade and Happily Ever After fireworks.
Days 3–4: EPCOT and Hollywood Studios
Day 3: EPCOT — Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind (LL Premier required), Test Track, Remy's Ratatouille Adventure, World Showcase France for dinner. Day 4: Hollywood Studios — Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, MFSR, Slinky Dog Dash, Tower of Terror.
Days 5–6: Animal Kingdom + Free day
Day 5: Animal Kingdom — AVATAR Flight of Passage from opening, Na'Vi River Journey, Kilimanjaro Safaris late morning. Day 6: Free day or half day EPCOT (Festival in progress depending on season) + pool rest.
Days 7–8: Return to favorite WDW parks
Use these two days to revisit Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, re-do your favorite attractions, and enjoy reserved themed dinners (Cinderella's Royal Table, Chef Mickey's, etc.).
Days 9–10: Transfer + Islands of Adventure + Studio Florida
Day 9: Check out WDW, Uber to Universal Premier Hotel (quick check-in), then afternoon at Islands of Adventure — Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, Velocicoaster, Hogsmeade. Day 10: Universal Studios Florida — Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, Minions Mayhem, Springfield (Simpsons).
Days 11–12: EPIC UNIVERSE (the highlight of the stay)
Days 11 AND 12: Dedicate the last two full days to Epic Universe. Day 11: Battle at the Ministry (Harry Potter), Mine-Cart Madness (Nintendo), Monsters Unchained (Dark Universe). Day 12: Hiccup's Wing Gliders (Dragon Isle), Stardust Racers (Celestial Park), redo your favorite attractions thanks to Express Unlimited.
5. Why the two resorts are essential
The two resorts do not compete with each other — they complement each other. Everyone has unique experiences that cannot be replicated anywhere else.
What only Walt Disney World offers: AVATAR Flight of Passage (unparalleled sensory immersion), Tiana's Bayou Adventure, TRON Lightcycle Run, Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind, the monorail resort, character dinners, and the total magic of Disney Springs at night.
What only Universal Epic Universe offers: Battle at the Ministry (technologically the most advanced dark ride ever built in Orlando), Mine-Cart Madness (unique boom coaster in the world), Monsters Unchained (KUKA robots), and the radically different atmosphere of a non-Disney IP.
The question we often ask
“If I only have 10 days, do I sacrifice WDW days for Epic Universe? » Our answer: yes, within reason. Remove a redundant WDW day (second visit to a park already done) and dedicate it to Epic Universe. Battle at the Ministry alone justifies the detour.
